EngD on the Design and Demonstration of Free-Space Optical Communication Systems
This EngD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the design and demonstration of free-space optical (FSO) communication systems for satellite communications. The project is part of a collaborative research initiative involving leading technology companies and two prominent research groups at TU/e: the Signal Processing Systems (SPS) and Electronic Systems (ES) groups. The successful candidate will join a team working on field demonstrations of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for FSO communications, contributing to the development of next-generation satellite-based links that leverage the vast bandwidth available in the THz regime.
The research aims to address the paradigm shift from intensity-modulated to coherent transmission in FSO systems, enabling higher data rates and throughput. The project is conducted in close collaboration with Cubiq Technologies and offers opportunities to work alongside PhD students and industry partners. The Information and Communication Theory Lab (ICT Lab) at TU/e, recognized globally for its research in information and communication theory, provides a stimulating environment for exploring fundamental limits and advanced data processing techniques, including coding and DSP algorithms.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with a strong background in digital signal processing. Experience with error correcting codes, programming languages (MATLAB, Python, C/C++), and RTL design and FPGA prototyping (VHDL/Verilog/HLS tools) is highly desirable. Candidates must demonstrate a research-oriented attitude, collaborative skills, and fluency in English (C1 level).
The position offers full-time employment for two years, with a monthly salary of €3,029, year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid parental leave, and access to a personal development program for EngD trainees.
