PhD in Visual Analytics for Historical Paintings

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology offers a unique opportunity to advance visual analytics methods for the study of historical paintings, in close collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum. The project focuses on developing interactive visual analysis frameworks and techniques tailored to high-dimensional imaging data, particularly X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging, which reveals the chemical composition and structure of paint layers. The research aims to support art historians, conservators, and the broader public by enabling richer exploration and interpretation of complex, multimodal painting datasets. As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the creation of new visual analytics methodologies and prototype tools, author scientific papers, and present your work at international conferences. You will also implement open-source software to demonstrate the effectiveness of your methods. The project is embedded within the Visualization Cluster at TU/e, renowned for its expertise in scientific visualization, Explainable AI, and complex imaging analysis, and has a strong track record of award-winning contributions at major visualization conferences. The Van Gogh Museum, a leading cultural heritage institution, increasingly utilizes advanced imaging techniques in its research on the Van Gogh collection. This partnership provides a stimulating interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of science, technology, and the arts, offering access to unique datasets and collaborative opportunities. Applicants should have a strong background in visualization, visual analytics, computer graphics, and/or machine learning, preferably with a master's degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. Expertise in visualization or visual analytics, strong programming skills (C++, Python), and proficiency in English are required. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, creativity, critical thinking, and motivation are essential. The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Benefits include a competitive salary (scale P: €3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid leave, allowances for commuting and internet costs, access to sports facilities, and support for international candidates (including the 30% tax facility). TU/e provides high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, and a vibrant academic community in the Brainport Eindhoven region, known for its high-tech industries and collaborative research environment. To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, including a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. Only complete applications will be considered. The vacancy will remain open until filled, with a deadline of May 15, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Anna Vilanova ([email protected]).
