PhD in AI, Innovation Management, and Organizational Performance (Double Degree, University of Groningen & Macquarie University)

The University of Groningen, in partnership with Macquarie University, offers a unique 4-year double-degree PhD position focused on understanding the paradoxical effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on organizational performance. This interdisciplinary project integrates innovation management, digital transformation, AI governance, and paradox theory to investigate how AI can both enhance and challenge organizational outcomes such as efficiency, productivity, decision quality, and innovation. The successful candidate will spend the first two years at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), University of Groningen, Netherlands, and the following two years at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. The research aims to develop and empirically test frameworks explaining the drivers, uses, and consequences of AI in organizations, with particular attention to task risk, performance-goal coopetition, industry context, and governance structures. The project is embedded in the Innovation & Organisation research programme at FEB and contributes to the universities’ shared priorities in responsible innovation and ethical AI governance. Supervision will be provided by Dr Thijs Broekhuizen (University of Groningen) and Prof. Babak Abedin (Macquarie University), both recognized experts in innovation management and digital transformation. The candidate will benefit from access to international research networks, unique data sources, and a vibrant academic community. The position is fully funded: during the first two years at Groningen, the candidate receives a competitive salary and employment benefits under the Dutch university system; during the two years at Macquarie, a living allowance, full tuition scholarship, and travel budget are provided. The PhD will be awarded jointly by both institutions, offering enhanced recognition and career prospects. Applicants should have a strong interest and background in the management, governance, and organizational implications of AI, with prior research experience in related fields being a strong advantage. Excellent communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to work in hybrid, cross-institutional teams are essential. English language proficiency and eligibility for Macquarie’s graduate research scholarships are required. Applicants must not already hold or be enrolled in a doctoral program at Macquarie or another institution. The application deadline is 2 March 2026. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, diploma and transcript, proof of English proficiency, and other relevant documents via the University of Groningen’s online system.
