Maastricht University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is seeking a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Political Philosophy, with a research focus on inequality in contemporary European democracies. The position is part of the Dutch National sector plan, specifically Theme 5 – Social inequality and diversity. The successful candidate will join a diverse and international group of philosophers working across political philosophy, philosophy of technology, and philosophy of art and culture. The role involves both research and teaching, contributing to the department’s strengths in normative theory, critical theory, and the study of democracy and inequality. The appointee will engage in field-leading research in political philosophy, publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, and organizing research activities. Teaching responsibilities include co-teaching and coordinating courses, supervising BA and MA theses, and leading student research projects. The candidate will also be expected to apply for external research funding at the national and European level and collaborate with colleagues in interdisciplinary teaching and research activities. Applicants must have a PhD in political philosophy, political theory, social philosophy, or a closely related field, with a growing publication record appropriate to their career stage. Experience in teaching and supervising students at the undergraduate and ideally graduate level is required. Candidates should have excellent command of English (C1 level) and be able to teach in English. A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary education and research are essential. The successful candidate must be willing to obtain the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) and acquire Dutch language skills up to B1 level within three years. Candidates from under-represented groups in academia and philosophy are particularly encouraged to apply. The position offers an 18-month contract with the prospect of a permanent contract, subject to positive assessment. The gross monthly salary ranges from €4,728 to €6,433 (full-time, 38 hours per week), with additional benefits including 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, 29 vacation days, flexible working hours, home office allowance, hybrid working options, a solid pension scheme, company fitness arrangements, and access to university sports facilities. The department is based in the heart of Europe and is committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching. Research in the department focuses on three main areas: philosophy of technology, political philosophy, and philosophy of art and culture. The successful candidate will join the “Europe: Society, Politics, and Global Order” research programme and contribute to the Dutch national-level humanities and social sciences sector plan on societal inequality and diversity. To apply, candidates should submit a full CV, motivation letter, research and teaching statement, teaching evaluations (if available), a writing sample, and contact information for up to three referees.
