Postdoc in Thermodynamics of Hydrogen and Its Mixtures

This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the transition towards a sustainable energy system, focusing on the thermodynamics of hydrogen and its mixtures. The research is part of the GroenvermogenNL innovation programme, funded by the Dutch government, which aims to accelerate the introduction and large-scale storage of green hydrogen. The successful candidate will investigate the thermodynamic behavior of hydrogen when stored in underground depleted gas fields, particularly the vapor-liquid equilibrium and phase changes that occur during cycling and withdrawal, where hydrogen may be contaminated with natural gas and water vapor. The project involves experimental work using a Pulse Expansion Wave Tube to measure water droplet formation under extreme conditions, as well as preparing gas mixtures and designing experiments to quantify thermodynamic properties. The research encompasses literature studies on relevant gas mixtures, including hydrogen, natural gas, higher hydrocarbons, and water fractions, and the use of equations of state (EOS). Results will be evaluated, reported, and published in international literature and presented at consortium and stakeholder meetings. The position is based in the Energy Technology Section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, providing access to excellent technical infrastructure and a vibrant academic community. The postdoc will interact with a broad consortium of industrial partners, knowledge institutes, and universities, including Gasunie, EBN, Nobian, Shell, TNO, Deltares, and Utrecht and Delft Universities. The university offers a dynamic and ambitious environment, with high-quality training programs, support for international candidates, and a range of benefits including a competitive salary, bonuses, parental leave, and allowances for commuting and home office costs. Applicants should hold a PhD in experimental physics or a related field, demonstrate high-quality research outputs, and possess strong communication, leadership, and project management skills. The ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and coach students is essential. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV with publications and references, and up to five best publications. The position will remain open until filled, with priority given to complete applications. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. David Smeulders or HR Services. This is a unique opportunity to join a leading international university and contribute to cutting-edge research in energy technology and sustainable hydrogen storage.
