Two PhD positions are open in biophysics at Stockholm University / SciLifeLab in Stockholm, Sweden, with a deadline of 22 April 2026 . The post highlights two complementary research directions in membrane protein science: cryo-EM structural biology of membrane proteins in native membranes and computational biophysics / AI-driven modeling of membrane proteins . The experimental PhD project focuses on cryo-EM , structural biology , and membrane protein behavior in native-like environments, including ligand-gated ion channels, liposomes, and cell-derived membrane vesicles. The project emphasizes advanced sample preparation, image classification, and data processing to resolve structures in heterogeneous membrane systems. The computational PhD project focuses on AI , molecular dynamics , bioinformatics , and simulation-based inference for membrane proteins, especially pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs). The work combines cryo-EM data, deep learning, and modeling of conformational transitions, allosteric modulation, and lipid interactions. Eligibility is based on Stockholm University’s PhD entry requirements. Applicants should have a second-cycle degree or equivalent, plus the required background in Physics or Chemistry and advanced coursework in Biophysics , Biochemistry , or Physical Chemistry . Strong English, analytical ability, collaboration, initiative, and independence are important. For the experimental track, extensive lab experience is expected; for the computational track, strong experience in computational methods is preferred. The positions are salaried doctoral employments for up to four years full-time, with possible limited duties in teaching, research, or administration. Interested candidates should apply through Stockholm University’s recruitment system and upload a personal letter, CV, and all requested supporting documents before the deadline.
