About
Professor Erik van Sebille is a faculty member at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His research interests encompass physical oceanography, marine plastic dispersal, and the impacts of climate change on oceanic systems. Recent publications include studies on virtual fieldwork for oceanography education, the connectivity of land-derived substances in the Caribbean, and the effects of wave-driven currents on particle dispersal. He is also involved in public engagement initiatives related to sea level rise and climate communication.

Erik van Sebille
Utrecht University
Utrecht University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a major research project focused on the simulation of coastal plastic pollution. The position is based at the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric research, Department of Physics, within the Lagrangian Ocean Analysis group led by Professor Erik van Sebille. The project, funded by an NWO Vici grant, aims to improve understanding of macroplastic pollution in Northwest European seas and coasts through advanced numerical modelling and observational data. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of oceanography, fluid dynamics, and applied mathematics, developing simulations using the Parcels-code.org Lagrangian framework. Responsibilities include setting up hydrodynamic coastal flow fields (using models such as SWAN, SWASH, or SCHISM), writing Python code to simulate the transport of macroplastic particles, analyzing dispersion patterns, and comparing simulation results with experimental data from floating trackers. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including other postdocs and PhD candidates, is central to the role. Applicants should hold a PhD in fluid dynamics, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field, and possess strong Python programming skills. Affinity with coastal simulations, motivation to work in a diverse team, and excellent English communication skills are required. Experience in physical oceanography is preferred. The position offers a two-year contract, a gross monthly salary between €3,546 and €5,538, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment terms. Utrecht University provides a supportive environment for professional development and values diversity and inclusion among its staff. To apply, candidates should submit a motivation letter, CV, and contact details for at least two referees via the university's online application portal by 2 March 2026. For further information, contact Professor Erik van Sebille at [email protected]. Keywords: coastal plastic pollution, oceanography, numerical modelling, fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, Python programming, marine macroplastics, hydrodynamic simulations, Parcels-code.org, Northwest European seas.
