Doctoral Researcher in Dependable Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Cyber-Physical Systems (3 positions)

Tampere University is inviting applications for three fully funded Doctoral Researcher positions in the Dependability and Automation Research in Cyber-Physical Systems (DARES) Group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The positions focus on dependable automation, trustworthy artificial intelligence, resilient control, and cybersecurity of cyber-physical systems , with research grounded in control engineering, AI, cybersecurity, and optimization. The successful researchers will contribute to national and European projects with applications in intelligent wind energy systems, energy-flexible process industries, smart microgrids , and other safety-critical industrial cyber-physical systems. The role offers the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment with academic and industrial collaboration, high-impact publications, conference presentations, and possible short-term research visits to partner institutions. Applicants may express preference for one or more of three research directions: (1) Federated Learning and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence , including privacy-preserving collaborative machine learning, explainable AI, distributed intelligence, and condition monitoring; (2) Resilient Control and Optimization for Industrial Systems , including advanced control, optimization, and decision-making for adaptive operation; and (3) Cybersecurity and Resilience of Cyber-Physical Systems , including secure automation, cyberattack detection and mitigation, and resilient architectures. Eligibility is aimed at candidates who hold, or will hold by the start date, a Master’s degree in systems and control, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. A solid background in control systems, automation, machine learning and AI, optimization, cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, or energy systems is expected, together with strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, or similar. Excellent written and spoken English is required; Finnish is not required. Candidates should also be able to work both independently and collaboratively. The positions are full-time and fully funded for three years , with a typical starting salary of approximately €2,700–3,000 per month under the Finnish University Salary System, and salary progression depending on experience and doctoral study progress.
