Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate in Honeybee Bacteriophages and Advanced Biotechnology

The University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, is offering a full-time, fixed-term Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on honeybee bacteriophages and advanced biotechnology. The successful candidate will join the School of Biological Sciences and participate in a cutting-edge research project aimed at unlocking new genetic tools to protect honeybees and advance biotechnology. The research centers on examining a mobile genetic element found in the honey bee pathogen Paenibacillus larvae, with the goal of developing and validating methods to assess its molecular functioning and fitness effects. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a completed PhD in Biology or a closely related discipline, or those who have submitted their PhD and are awaiting conferral. Applicants should have a strong background in microbial genetics and/or molecular evolution, excellent quantitative and data analysis skills, and a proven publication record. Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English, as well as experience in delivering oral presentations, are essential. The ability to work creatively and independently is highly valued. The position offers a dynamic international research environment, extensive collaboration with project partners in Biochemistry and the Bioeconomy Science Institute, and mentorship from Associate Professor Heather Hendrickson. The School of Biological Sciences is committed to supporting the UN’s sustainable development goals, including research on climate change and sustainable life on land and below water. Funding for the position includes a salary range of NZD $64,096–$74,773 per annum for Research Associates and NZD $64,096–$96,144 per annum for Postdoctoral Fellows, with salary progression upon PhD conferral.
