This PhD Research Fellow position in marine geomicrobiology is based at the Department of Earth Science , University of Bergen , and is linked to the Centre for Deep Sea Research and the Geochemistry and Geobiology research group. The project addresses how rapid Arctic Ocean change affects the carbon flux from surface waters to the seafloor, and how that shift influences the microorganisms living in Arctic sediments. The successful candidate will investigate the short- and long-term effects of variable organic carbon supply on microbial activity and diversity, combining in situ experimental setups with geochemical measurements, molecular microbiology methods, and bioinformatics. The position sits within the wider Arctic Ocean 2050 program, an interdisciplinary Norwegian research initiative focused on understanding the present and future of the Arctic Ocean. The project environment is strongly research-oriented and connected to marine and deep-sea research, and the appointed candidate is expected to participate in one or more research cruises during the project period. Supervision and project contact are provided by Associate Professor Steffen Leth Jørgensen and Professor Ingunn H Thorseth .
