About this position
This PhD Research Fellow position in marine geomicrobiology is based at the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen, and is linked to the Centre for Deep Sea Research and the Geochemistry and Geobiology research group.
The project addresses how rapid Arctic Ocean change affects the carbon flux from surface waters to the seafloor, and how that shift influences the microorganisms living in Arctic sediments. The successful candidate will investigate the short- and long-term effects of variable organic carbon supply on microbial activity and diversity, combining in situ experimental setups with geochemical measurements, molecular microbiology methods, and bioinformatics.
The position sits within the wider Arctic Ocean 2050 program, an interdisciplinary Norwegian research initiative focused on understanding the present and future of the Arctic Ocean. The project environment is strongly research-oriented and connected to marine and deep-sea research, and the appointed candidate is expected to participate in one or more research cruises during the project period.
Supervision and project contact are provided by Associate Professor Steffen Leth Jørgensen and Professor Ingunn H Thorseth.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in geomicrobiology or an associated field. Master’s students may apply if they complete their final master’s exam before 2027-01-01, but the master's degree must be awarded before employment starts. Experience with molecular microbiology methods such as DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing and/or bioinformatics is required. Experience with microbial processes in sediments, geochemical modeling, and sea-going research cruises is advantageous. Applicants must work independently and in a structured manner, have good collaborative skills, be motivated for mobility and relocation to Norway by the time of employment, and have good written and oral English skills. Approved English proficiency documentation may be required for PhD admission.
How to apply
Apply through Jobbnorge and upload the application together with all required appendices.
