Doctoral Position in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing
This doctoral position at ETH Zürich’s Institute of Environmental Engineering (IFU), Chair Earth Observation, offers an exciting opportunity for research in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, specifically focusing on snow and ice parameter estimation using high-frequency multi-modal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). The project aims to advance scientific understanding in the cryosphere domain through two main topics: (1) analyzing SAR interferometry to generate time series of digital elevation models for quantifying changes in glaciers and ice sheets, and (2) characterizing and identifying glacier crevasses and their dynamics using high-resolution SAR data. The first topic leverages established methodologies to extend analysis to new regions and timeframes, while the second requires the development of novel methods for crevasse identification, utilizing airborne acquisitions and exploring imaging modes such as polarimetry, interferometry, and tomography.
Numerous snow and glacier test sites worldwide will provide ground validation measurements and reference data for satellite observations. The research will be conducted in collaboration with a multidisciplinary and international team, and will be assessed in relation to upcoming and existing mission proposals. Applicants should hold a master’s degree or diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, computational science, mathematics, physics, or a related field. Strong analytical skills and programming experience in Python, C/C++, or equivalent are required. Experience in snow/ice modelling, field work, and handling large datasets is advantageous. Fluency in English (oral and written) is mandatory, and candidates must be willing to work in a multidisciplinary and international team. A valid European Category B driver’s license is also required.
