Assistant Professor in Hybrid Metallic Structures – Structural Engineering, Materials Science, Sustainability
The Department of Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor in Hybrid Metallic Structures. This role is ideal for researchers interested in the design, optimization, and mechanical performance of multi-material structures, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and circularity in construction. The successful candidate will focus on developing, characterizing, and implementing hybrid and composite structural systems, combining dissimilar metals and other materials (such as bio-based materials, polymers, or high-performance concrete) using advanced fabrication technologies like additive manufacturing and friction stir welding.
Key research areas include experimental testing, numerical modeling, analytical methods, and data-driven approaches for assessing structural performance and durability. The position involves formulating research questions around the construction and mechanical performance of joints, composite action of multi-material structures, evaluation of structural reliability using diverse data sources, and the development of digital twins with predictive capabilities.
The appointee will contribute to interdisciplinary BSc and MSc courses that integrate structural engineering and materials science, with a focus on sustainability and digitalization. The role encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration among students from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and environmental studies. The successful candidate will join the Steel and Aluminium Structures group, which boasts a strong track record in metallic structures and advanced numerical modeling, supported by excellent laboratory facilities.
Applicants must hold a PhD in mechanical or civil engineering or a related field, with a proven track record in multi-material mechanics and data-driven research. Experience in teaching, strong cooperation and leadership skills, and excellent English proficiency are required.
