PhD Position in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition – Biological Sex Differences, Durability, Metabolism, and Nutritional Strategies in Endurance Sports

The Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH), the leading institution for sport science education and research in the Nordic region, invites applications for a PhD position in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition. The position is based in the Department of Physical Performance, which specializes in understanding determinants of physical performance through research and education in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and technology. The department operates state-of-the-art laboratories and focuses on optimal training, technique, and rehabilitation for diverse populations, including youth, elite athletes, the elderly, and patients. This PhD fellowship, starting September/October 2026, spans three to four years (four years if teaching duties are included). The research project centers on biological sex differences in performance-limiting factors, durability, metabolism, fatigue development, and the influence of nutritional strategies in well-trained individuals and elite athletes in endurance sports. The project will combine laboratory and field-based studies, with research questions and methods refined in collaboration with the successful candidate. The PhD candidate will actively participate in all aspects of the project, including study design, participant recruitment, data collection (performance assessments, indirect calorimetry, metabolic measurements, muscle biopsy analysis), data analysis, and dissemination of findings. Collaboration with NIH researchers and external partners is integral, and international research exchange opportunities are encouraged. Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Øyvind Skattebo, Associate Professor Kristin Lundanes Jonvik, and Professor Jostein Hallén. The candidate must formally apply for enrolment in the NIH PhD program, with employment contingent upon successful admission. Main tasks include completing an independent research project, PhD coursework (30 ECTS), active participation in research environments, dissemination of results, and writing a PhD thesis. Teaching experience may be gained depending on departmental needs. Applicants must hold a two-year master’s degree in Sport Sciences or equivalent with a grade B or better. Experience in human studies, scientific writing, and advanced research methods (e.g., metabolism, cardiorespiratory fitness, indirect calorimetry, hemoglobin mass and blood volume measurement, metabolic marker analysis) is advantageous. Experience with performance and cardiopulmonary exercise testing of well-trained individuals or athletes is required. Familiarity with complex datasets and programming skills are beneficial. Strong written and oral English skills, reliability, motivation, and collaborative abilities are essential. NIH offers a starting salary of NOK 550,800 per year, with benefits including pension, loans, and insurance through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The department provides excellent training facilities, corporate sports teams, and opportunities for exercise during working hours. The workplace is located at Sognsveien 220, Oslo, Norway, with immediate access to public transport and secure bicycle parking.
