The University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science is seeking applications for an Associate Professor in Control Engineering, in association with a Non-Tutorial Fellowship at Jesus College. The Oxford Control Group is internationally recognized for its research and teaching in control theory, optimisation, and a wide range of applications including energy systems, engineering biology, synthetic biology, battery management, transportation, aerospace, manufacturing, and agriculture. The group’s expertise spans large-scale, embedded, robust and distributed optimisation, polynomial/sum of squares methods, and model predictive control. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct original research in control engineering and its applications, complementing or expanding the group’s current activities. Applicants should hold a doctorate (or be close to completion) in control engineering or a related field, with a strong research record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and collaborations. Teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels is required, along with excellent interpersonal skills for tutorial teaching. The role includes teaching undergraduate courses, supervising design and project work, and contributing to the department’s research portfolio by obtaining external funding and developing an independent research program. The position offers a competitive salary (£58,265–£77,645 per annum) plus additional benefits from Jesus College, and an allowance for those awarded the Full Professor title. The initial appointment is for five years, with the possibility of reappointment upon successful review. The University of Oxford is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from under-represented groups. The department provides support for interview travel and caring costs, and offers a range of family-friendly and diversity-supportive policies. To apply, candidates must submit a supporting statement, CV (including relevant publications), and research proposals as a single PDF (maximum 6 pages) via the University of Oxford recruitment portal. The deadline for applications is 12:00 noon on 6 January 2026. For further information, visit the official job posting or contact Professor Kostas Margellos at [email protected] . Keywords: Control Engineering, Control Theory, Optimisation, Energy Systems, Engineering Biology, Robust Control, Model Predictive Control, Distributed Optimisation, Synthetic Biology, Battery Management Systems.

[Full award for UK students: home fees plus stipend. Course fees covered at the UK rate (at least £10,940 per year). Stipend is at least about £21,805 per year for the first year and for a further two and a half years.] PhD/D.Phil. studentship at the University of Oxford in Control Theory, Optimization and Learning , focused on data-driven control engineering for large-scale uncertain systems . This project sits at the intersection of control engineering, optimization, statistical learning, and AI. The research aims to address core challenges in modern control design, including scalability, efficiency, robustness guarantees, and the use of emerging “world models” to extend traditional modelling frameworks. Potential work may involve developing control-theoretic and AI methods for reliable, robust control systems and applying them to large-scale uncertain systems. The studentship integrates with research activities connected to the new MSc in AI for Engineering Biology in Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science. Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary environment and may collaborate with academic and industrial partners nationally and internationally. The project offers training in theory, algorithm design, engineering, and the application of control methods to AI technologies, with career pathways in academia, bioscience industry, and entrepreneurship/start-ups. Funding: full award for UK students, including home fees and a stipend. Course fees are covered at the UK rate (at least £10,940 per year). The stipend is at least approximately £21,805 per year for the first year and continues at that level for a further two and a half years. There may be flexibility to support international students, but applicants from outside the UK should contact the supervisors before applying. Eligibility: applicants should have a first-class or strong 2:1 degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics, and strong English communication skills. Relevant experience in control engineering, AI, mathematics, robotics, or software/programming is desirable. Deadline: noon on 2 December 2026. Start date: October 2027. Apply via: the University of Oxford graduate application system using the Apply button on the posting page. Quote reference 27ENGCO_AP in all correspondence and in the application.
