About

Laura Parkkinen is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, specializing in neurobiology and the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Her recent research focuses on the spatial organization of microglia in the human brain, alpha-synuclein fibrils, and the role of astrocytes in modulating dopaminergic activity. She has also contributed to the development of tools for understanding alpha-synuclein diversity in Lewy body diseases, along with investigations into the transcriptome of midbrain dopamine neurons.

PhD Studentship in Translational Neuropathology at the University of Oxford , in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences , with Laura Parkkinen’s lab. This project focuses on Parkinson’s disease and the molecular drivers of alpha-synuclein seeding and aggregation. The research aims to decipher the “aggregatome” surrounding alpha-synuclein aggregates, including proteins, post-translational modifications (PTMs), lipids, glycosaminoglycans, and other cofactors that may influence disease spread and progression. The work is part of the ASAP (Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s) Collaborative Research Network , involving the University of Oxford, the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, and LMU Munich. The team combines expertise in seed amplification assays , mass spectrometry-based proteomics , advanced biochemistry, neuropathology, and access to longitudinal patient cohorts with matched biosamples. Research materials include samples from the brain, cerebrospinal fluid, blood, skin, and stool , with the broader goal of improving understanding of disease progression and supporting better biomarkers and personalized therapies. The post highlights a world-class research environment, cutting-edge facilities, laboratory infrastructure, technical support, seminars, specialist meetings, and training opportunities at Oxford. Application deadline: noon Friday 23 October 2026. How to apply: Follow the application link in the post and consult the NDCN studentships and scholarships page for full instructions.
