PhD Opportunities in Satellite Geodesy, Remote Sensing, AI/ML, and Earth Surface Dynamics at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
PhD opportunities are available for Fall 2027 in the research group of Lin Shen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Science & Environmental Change at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The group works at the intersection of satellite geodesy, remote sensing, computational methods, and AI/ML to study Earth-surface dynamics and the physical processes that drive them. Research directions include earthquake cycles, fault mechanics, and crustal dynamics; volcanic unrest, monitoring, and hazards; hydrologic, coastal, and environmental processes; and AI/ML for Earth observation and physical interpretation.
Applicants from geophysics, remote sensing, geology, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, and related fields are encouraged to apply. Programming experience is highly preferred, and experience with SAR/InSAR, geospatial analysis, numerical modeling, or machine learning is especially valuable.
