Fully Funded MSc and PhD Positions in Radar Remote Sensing of Arctic Sea Ice

The Polar Remote Sensing Research Group at McGill University is recruiting one fully funded MSc student and one fully funded PhD student to start in September 2027. The research focus is radar remote sensing of Arctic sea ice, with the PhD project centered on radar analysis using multi-frequency SAR and the MSc project centered on SAR-based characterization of sea ice in the Canadian Arctic. Relevant study areas include Earth Science, Physics, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, and remote sensing/geophysics-related fields. The group highlights work involving radar data, backscatter, polarimetry, satellite imagery, GIS, large raster datasets, cloud platforms, machine learning, and Arctic field campaigns/fieldwork. Funding is fully covered for both positions through Award + RA + TA support. PhD applicants should have an MSc in a related field, prior hands-on radar experience, advanced programming skills, strong scientific writing, and ideally a first-author publication or manuscript in preparation. MSc applicants should have a BSc in a related field, advanced programming skills, and a background or coursework in remote sensing, GIS, geophysics, or satellite imagery; radar experience is welcome but not required. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are preferred for the MSc position.
