Postdoctoral Position in Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy of Quantum Materials

ETH Zürich’s FERROIC Lab (Laboratory for Functional Ferroic Materials) is offering a postdoctoral position in ultrafast laser spectroscopy of quantum materials. The group develops and applies advanced spectroscopy across the terahertz to ultraviolet spectral range to explore fundamental non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed-matter systems, with a particular focus on strongly correlated electron materials and emergent dynamics far from equilibrium. The project investigates how intense ultrafast optical or terahertz excitation can generate, manipulate, and probe novel dynamical states in quantum materials. A central theme is the study of non-Hermitian phase transitions, their microscopic origin, universal properties, and manifestations across a broad class of correlated materials. The work sits at the interface of ultrafast optics, condensed-matter physics, and microscopic theory, with strong connections to leading international collaborators. This is a hands-on experimental role. The successful candidate will design, build, optimize, and extend advanced optical and/or terahertz pump-probe experiments, contribute to new measurement concepts, and take primary responsibility for the experimental platform, including alignment, troubleshooting, upgrades, and routine maintenance. The laboratory emphasizes instrumentation development and scientific creativity, offering substantial freedom to develop original experimental strategies and new ideas. Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in experimental physics or a related discipline and should bring substantial practical experience with ultrafast laser systems. Experience in condensed-matter physics is beneficial. The position is ideal for researchers who enjoy challenging scientific problems, independent work, and interdisciplinary collaboration in a highly international environment.
