The University of Lausanne (UNIL) is offering a 5-year PhD position in the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST), focusing on soil biogeochemistry in proglacial margins. The successful candidate will join the pedology group and work on quantifying chemical weathering fluxes in environments exposed by glacier retreat. This research is crucial for understanding the carbon cycle and feedbacks between glacier retreat and atmospheric CO2, as newly exposed sediments undergo active pedogenesis and chemical weathering. The project involves fieldwork in remote alpine locations, soil and water sampling, wet chemical laboratory analyses, and the development of quantitative frameworks to estimate weathering fluxes. The candidate will also contribute to teaching soil courses at the Bachelor and Master's level, especially in the Masters of Biogeosciences, and participate in research and outreach initiatives such as the Swiss-Soil resource. Applicants should have a Master's degree in soil science, biogeochemistry, geology, or earth science, with a solid background in pedology, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Experience in weathering studies is advantageous but not required. Candidates must be able to conduct fieldwork in challenging alpine environments and have an interest in laboratory work. Statistical and modelling skills, or a willingness to learn them, are expected. Proficiency in English and a working knowledge of French are required, with French classes available to help reach the necessary level within a year of hiring. The position offers a renewable contract (1 year, renewable twice for 2 years each, up to 5 years total) at 80% activity rate, with a salary according to Swiss university standards.
