The Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for a PhD position in Computational Geometry, focusing on fundamental algorithmic questions related to geometric networks and intersection graphs. Computational geometry is a vibrant area within algorithms research, combining advanced algorithmic techniques with geometric concepts to solve problems involving spatial data. This project aims to generalize results on planar graphs to geometric intersection graphs, including the famous Planar Separator Theorem, and to develop efficient algorithms for these structures. Geometric intersection graphs are used in modeling sensor networks and represent a generalization of planar graphs. The PhD project will be supervised by Professor Mark de Berg, a leading expert in computational geometry, with collaborative opportunities involving Professor Kisfaludi-Bak from Aalto University, Finland. The successful candidate will join the TU/e Algorithms cluster, one of the largest research groups worldwide dedicated to algorithms research, with interests spanning computational geometry, topology, graph and FPT algorithms, algorithms for massive data, geo-visualization, and computational social choice. The cluster offers a lively, international research environment and high-quality training programs to foster scientific growth. As a PhD student, you will conduct research in close collaboration with your supervisor and peers, participate in international conferences and workshops, and assist in teaching algorithms-related courses as a teaching assistant. The position is based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, at a dynamic and ambitious university located in the Brainport Eindhoven region—a world-leading tech hub with strong R&D activity and high-tech industries. TU/e is home to a diverse academic community, with over 13,000 students and 7,000 staff, and the Mathematics and Computer Science department brings together more than 140 scientific staff and over 250 PhD and EngD candidates. Employment conditions include a four-year full-time contract, salary scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid parental leave, commuting and internet allowances, access to sports facilities, and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates. The university provides excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, and support for international staff. All courses and research activities are conducted in English, and Dutch language proficiency is not required. Applicants must have a master’s degree in computer science or mathematics with a strong background in algorithms, a passion for research, and fluency in English (C1 level). Application materials should include a cover letter, CV, grade list, draft master thesis (if available), and contact information for two references. The application deadline is May 2, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Mark de Berg ([email protected]) or visit the TU/e Algorithms cluster website. Apply online via the provided link. Only complete applications will be considered. A pre-employment screening may be part of the selection procedure. Join TU/e and contribute to cutting-edge research in computational geometry!
