PhD Position in Dynamic Stress Catalysis (Chemistry/Chemical Engineering) at Utrecht University

Utrecht University is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Department of Chemistry, focusing on dynamic stress catalysis. The project, titled "Good Vibes - Stimulating catalysis through vibrations," aims to uncover how dynamic stress drives CO₂ conversion into valuable chemicals, contributing to sustainable chemistry. The research will explore the mechanisms behind enhanced catalytic performance using a novel piezoelectric method to induce high-frequency strain in catalyst bodies, with a demonstrated 30× increase in catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reactions. The successful candidate will investigate the influence of dynamic stress on catalyst performance, selectivity, and stability in CO₂ activation reactions, employing operando characterisation techniques. The project is situated at the interface of catalysis, structural dynamics, and materials science, and is part of the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis (ICC) research group within the Institute for Sustainable and Circular Chemistry. The group specializes in the characterisation, performance, and synthesis of inorganic functional materials, with a strong emphasis on heterogeneous catalysts for energy storage and sustainable conversion processes. Applicants should hold a MSc in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Experience in surface chemistry, analytical characterisation, CO₂ electroreduction, and vibrational spectroscopy (such as Raman) is advantageous. The position offers a collaborative environment with leading experts, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The initial contract is for 18 months, extendable to four years upon successful assessment, with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. To apply, candidates should submit a motivation letter, CV, and contact details of at least two referees via the Utrecht University job portal by 15 December 2025. For further information, contact Dr. Matteo Monai at [email protected]. The university values diversity and strives to create an inclusive environment for all staff and students.
