Postdoctoral Research Associate position
The Network Science Institute (NetSI) at Northeastern University, in collaboration with the Bouve College of Health Sciences, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the lab of Research Professor Michael Johansson. NetSI is a world-leading center for research and education in network science, advancing the understanding of complex systems and applying this knowledge to solve real-world problems in fields such as urban science, public health, social science, and economics. Professor Johansson’s lab operates at the intersection of research and operational public health, utilizing statistical and mathematical models to improve surveillance, prevention, and control of infectious diseases. Research projects include assessing drivers of global infectious disease dynamics, developing short- and long-term forecasts for diseases (with a focus on arboviral diseases like dengue and Oropouche viruses), improving risk assessment, optimizing surveillance system design, and developing and evaluating mitigation strategies. The overarching goal is to integrate epidemiology, complex systems, and network science to develop, evaluate, and implement novel models that support public health decision-making. Responsibilities for the postdoctoral associate include leading and contributing to projects using mathematical and statistical models to address emerging public health challenges, preparing and presenting findings through research articles, public presentations, and interactive tools, participating in career development activities such as mentoring students and grant writing, and engaging with the NetSI community through organizing talks, attending workshops, and collaborating on projects. Applicants must hold a PhD in a related discipline (epidemiology, applied mathematics, statistics, or network science) by the start date, have experience developing complex models for real-world data, possess strong programming skills in R, Python, and/or Julia, and be adept at communicating complex findings to diverse audiences. Northeastern University offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, dental, paid time off, tuition assistance, wellness, retirement, and commuting/transportation support. The expected hiring range is $59,425.00 to $83,935.00, with the starting salary dependent on education, experience, and expertise. Application review is ongoing, and candidates are encouraged to apply promptly. To apply, submit a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact details for two references via the Northeastern University careers portal.
