Postdoctoral Research Associate
About the Opportunity
The Network Science Institute (NetSI) at Northeastern University is a world-leading center for research and education in network science. NetSI faculty and researchers are working to advance the understanding of complex systems through the lens of networks, and to apply this knowledge to solve real-world problems in a wide range of fields, including urban science, public health, social science, and economics.
The Network Science Institute and Bouve College of Health Sciences are hiring one Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the lab of Research Professor Michael Johansson. Professor Johansson works at the interface of research and operational public health using statistical and mathematical models to improve surveillance, prevention, and control of infectious diseases. Example projects include assessing drivers of global infectious disease dynamics and developing short- and long-term forecasts for those diseases, with a focus on arboviral diseases (e.g., dengue or Oropouche viruses). Other projects include improving risk assessment, optimizing surveillance system design, and developing and evaluating mitigation strategies. These projects aim to integrate epidemiology, complex systems, and network science to develop, evaluate, and implement novel models to support public health decision making needs.
Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to projects using mathematical and statistical models to address emerging public health challenges,
  • Prepare and present findings through research articles, public presentations, and interactive tools that engage diverse audiences,
  • Participate in career development activities including mentoring students and grant writing, and
  • Participate in the Network Science Institute community by organizing talks, attending workshops, and contributing to collaborative projects that explore the intersection of complex systems and public health.

Qualifications
  • PhD in a related discipline (e.g., epidemiology, applied mathematics, statistics, or network science) by the start of the appointment,
  • Experience developing complex models for real world data, with strong programming skills (R, Python, and/or Julia), and
  • Experience interacting with and communicating complex findings to diverse partners (e.g., the public, scientists, or public health officials).

The hiring process for this role is ongoing. Application review will begin immediately, and candidates will be interviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. If you are interested, please submit the following materials with your application:
1. A cover letter detailing your research interests and fit for the position,
2. A CV with a list of publications, and
3. Names and contact details for two references.
