This study presents an improved, communication-free Fault Ride-Through (FRT) strategy for type-3 and type-4 wind turbine integrated modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) systems in offshore wind power plants (OWPPs). The research aims to enhance the reliability and resilience of OWPPs by ensuring their connection with AC grids remains intact during and after faults. Simulation results conducted on a 580 kV, 850 MW MMC-HVDC system using PSCAD/EMTDC software v.4.6.2 demonstrate quick post-fault recovery operation and the ability to effectively manage DC link and capacitor voltages within safe limits. Furthermore, the circulating current (CC) and capacitor voltage ripple (CVR) remain within acceptable limits, ensuring safe and reliable operation. The study’s major conclusion is that the proposed FRT strategy effectively mitigates the adverse effects of short circuit faults, such as a rapid rise in DC-link voltage, on the performance of the MMC-HVDC system. By promptly suppressing DC-link overvoltage, the proposed FRT scheme prevents compromising the safe operation of various power electronics equipment. These findings highlight the significance of FRT capability in OWPPs and emphasize the practical applicability of the proposed strategy in enhancing the reliability of offshore wind power generation.

This research paper presents a novel droop control strategy for sharing the load among three independent converter power systems in a microgrid. The proposed method employs a machine learning algorithm based on regression trees to regulate both the system frequency and terminal voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). The aim is to ensure seamless transitions between different modes of operation and maintain the load demand while distributing it among the available sources. To validate the performance of the proposed approach, the paper compares it to a traditional proportional integral (PI) controller for controlling the dynamic response of the frequency and voltage at the PCC. The simulation experiments conducted in MATLAB/Simulink show the effectiveness of the regression tree machine learning algorithm over the PI controller, in terms of the step response and harmonic distortion of the system. The results of the study demonstrate that the proposed approach offers an improved stability and efficiency for the system, making it a promising solution for microgrid operations.

A new ultra-local control (ULC) model and two marine predator algorithm (MPA)-based controllers; MPA-based proportional-integral-derivative with filter (PIDF) and MPA-based Fuzzy PIDF (FPIDF) controllers; are combined to enhance the frequency response of a hybrid microgrid system. The input scaling factors, boundaries of membership functions, and gains of the FPIDF con-troller are all optimized using the MPA. In order to further enhance the frequency response, the alpha parameter of the proposed ULC model is optimized using MPA. The performance of the pro-posed controller is evaluated in the microgrid system with different renewable energy sources and energy storage devices. Furthermore, a comparison of the proposed MPA-based ULC-PIDF and ULC-FPIDF controllers against the previously designed controllers is presented. Moreover, a vari-ety of scenarios are studied to determine the proposed controller’s sensitivity and robustness to changes in wind speed, step loads, solar irradiance, and system parameter changes. The results of time-domain simulations performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK are shown. Finally, the results demonstrate that under all examined conditions, the new ULC-based controllers tend to further enhance the hybrid microgrid system’s frequency time response.

In this study, a fuzzy proportional integral derivative controller (FPID) was adjusted using the differential evolution (DE) method to enhance the automated generation control (AGC) of a three-zone reheat-type power system. The objective function used in this study was an integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE). In the optimization, the gain control parameters of the proportional integral (PI), the integral (I), and FPID were optimized and compared to improve the limitations drawn by the controller over a few parameters. To demonstrate that FPID controllers with IPFC produce better and more accurate optimization results than integral and PI controllers optimized by DE, the interline power flow control (IPFC) of a flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device with suitable connections and control parameter optimization was used. Also, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) PID with IPFC was compared with the proposed DEFPID + IPFC, and better results were achieved by using the DE technique. Similarly, to demonstrate the suggested technology’s strong control capacity, random load changes were applied to the system in various conditions, and it was demonstrated that the suggested control unit easily tolerated random load perturbations and returned the system to a stable functioning state.
