PhD in Light Management in All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

The Materials to Optoelectronic Devices (M2D) group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is offering a PhD position focused on light management in all-perovskite tandem solar cells. The project is part of the Dutch SolarNL / SolarLab program and is embedded in a national research effort with collaborations involving AMOLF, TNO, and industrial partners. The research addresses optical losses that still limit the performance of record-breaking all-perovskite tandem solar cells. You will develop advanced light-management concepts to reduce reflection losses, parasitic absorption, and incomplete spectral splitting, with the goal of improving sunlight harvesting and current matching in tandem architectures. The project combines nanophotonic design, optical modelling, materials processing, and device fabrication. Research topics include photonic and light-management structures for enhanced absorption, material growth strategies to reduce parasitic losses in transparent conducting oxides, advanced spectral management concepts, optical simulations of multilayer photovoltaic devices, and fabrication/characterization of optical coatings and perovskite tandem devices. Applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Materials Science. The ideal candidate is motivated, academically strong, and interested in photovoltaics, optoelectronics, nanophotonics, or semiconductor materials. Excellent English communication skills are required; experimental experience is a plus. The project is interdisciplinary and collaborative, with opportunities to work across applied physics and chemical engineering research environments. The position is a full-time PhD appointment for four years at TU/e in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, with an intermediate assessment after nine months.
