PhD student position in fluid dynamics and optics for biomedical applications

This PhD position at ETH Zürich is part of a collaborative project between the Multiphase Fluid Dynamics group (Prof. Outi Supponen) at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and the Functional and Molecular Imaging group (Prof. Razansky) at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. The research centers on developing a novel, laser-based technique for precise, controlled opening of the blood-brain barrier (BBBO) to enable targeted drug delivery for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and brain tumors. The project aims to overcome the limitations of current methods, like focused ultrasound with microbubbles, by using laser-induced bubble generation to create temporary, safe openings in the BBB, allowing therapeutic agents to reach the brain with high precision and minimal side effects. The selected PhD student will focus on experimental research involving modeling and high-speed imaging to optimize bubble generation and control, as well as studying particle dynamics and cell interactions using in-vitro models. The work will also include validation in preclinical models, leveraging advanced imaging technologies such as fluorescence and optoacoustic imaging. The expected outcome is a laser-based platform for BBBO that can be translated into clinical applications, advancing both scientific understanding and therapeutic options for neurological disorders.
