PhD in Addressing Macular Diseases using Ultrathin Digital Optics

PhD opportunity at the University of Nottingham in Addressing Macular Diseases using Ultrathin Digital Optics , starting in October 2026 . This interdisciplinary project sits across the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science (Psychology) in the UK, bringing together mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence, clinical practice, and visual neuroscience. The project explores optical metasurfaces and ultrathin metamaterials as compact, passive optical devices that shape light in new ways. The aim is to develop multifunctional visual aids that may help address age-related macular degeneration and other eyesight problems by enhancing contrast at object edges and improving the visibility of shapes and details. Unlike bulky external devices or digital image-processing systems, this approach seeks a lightweight, electronics-free optical solution. Research activities are expected to include mathematical modelling and simulation of optical and photonic structures, fabrication of ultrathin metasurfaces in the University of Nottingham cleanrooms, and clinical/visual neuroscience applications. The work will be supported by photonics and visual neuroscience laboratories, dedicated electromagnetic and optical design software, and cleanroom fabrication facilities within a collaborative environment spanning science, engineering, psychology, and healthcare. Applicants should typically hold a 2:1 undergraduate degree or a Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science, Vision Science, or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution. A background in photonics/electromagnetics, nanoscience, or visual neuroscience/ophthalmology is desirable, along with programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar), strong analytical ability, and good English. Additional experience with simulation tools, machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, imaging systems, or optical lab work would strengthen an application.
