PhD Position in Advanced Recyclable Metamaterials from Bio-Waste at the University of Groningen

The University of Groningen is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of advanced recyclable metamaterials from bio-waste, as part of the ABEL (Ab-initio Biowaste Loop) project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The research aims to develop innovative technologies for upcycling low-grade organic waste into high-performance materials, addressing environmental challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions and resource inefficiency. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and wave dynamics. The successful candidate will work on the development of bio-polymer mono-materials derived from organic waste, focusing on their mechanical, acoustic, dynamic, and thermal properties. The research involves numerical modeling, experimental characterization, and the design of architected mono-blocks with application-specific functionalities, particularly for construction materials. The PhD student will collaborate closely with the Chemical Engineering Lab at the University of Groningen, ATA Mute B.V., and the Building Engineering Group at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. Supervision will be provided by Prof. Anastasiia Krushynska and Prof. Peter Deuss in the Metamechanics group at the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen. The position offers a competitive salary, generous vacation and holiday allowances, and extensive opportunities for professional development. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree, strong communication skills, and proficiency in academic English. The application deadline is January 31, 2026, but applications will be considered until the position is filled. For more information and to apply, visit the University of Groningen's application portal. Key research areas: metamaterials, bio-waste recycling, materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, additive manufacturing, wave dynamics, numerical modeling, polymer science, and construction materials.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Graphite from Renewable Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Postdoctoral researcher: Graphite from Renewable Aromatic Hydrocarbons at the University of Groningen (Faculty of Science and Engineering, Engineering & Technology Institute Groningen). This postdoctoral opening is in the Green Chemical Reaction Engineering group of Prof. Peter J. Deuss . The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering , materials science , chemistry , and polymer science , with a focus on converting isolated and purified carbon streams into mesophase carbon and graphitic materials for carbon fibre applications . The work is part of the Graphene project , a partnership involving BioBTX, Teijin Europe, ISPT, the University of Groningen, and Hanze University of Applied Science. The broader aim is to develop and optimize graphite production from side-streams of the BioBTX Integrated Cascading Catalytic Pyrolysis process based on waste plastics. Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in chemical or related sciences, have experience with carbon-based materials and their characterization, know how to handle different reactor setups, and be able to work safely in a chemical laboratory. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Funding and contract: this is a paid postdoctoral employment position with a salary of €4,251–€4,925 gross per month for full-time work (1.0 FTE), plus an end-of-year bonus and holiday allowance. The contract is temporary for 5 months. Application deadline: 18 October 2026, 23:59 Dutch local time. Apply through the vacancy page and include a CV and cover letter.
