PhD Position in Neuroscience and AI: Lifelong Learning and Representational Drift

A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, focusing on the mechanisms of lifelong learning in both biological and artificial systems. The project aims to understand how neural networks—both biological and artificial—accumulate knowledge over time, maximize transfer, and minimize interference, with a special focus on representational drift in the hippocampus. The research will combine computational modeling (deep learning, brain-inspired AI) with in vivo neurophysiology (longitudinal calcium imaging in freely behaving mice). The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Guillaume Etter (AI/Neurobiology), Suzanne van der Veldt (Neurobiology), and Peter Meerlo (Neurobiology). The project is embedded within the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), offering access to state-of-the-art facilities, high-performance computing, and a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in neuroscience, AI, or a related field, with relevant experience and proficiency in Python. Preference is given to those with experience in PyTorch, Github, SLURM, Linux, and animal experimentation. The position offers a competitive salary, full benefits, and professional development opportunities. The application deadline is 21 November 2025. To apply, submit a motivation letter, CV, referee contacts, proof of English proficiency (if required), and degree documentation.
