Rohan Mishra
Washington University in St. Louis
The Materials Modeling & Microscopy (M-cube) Group at Washington University in St. Louis, led by Associate Professor Rohan Mishra, is seeking a talented Postdoctoral Scholar for advanced research in electron microscopy of electronic materials. The position focuses on atomic-scale STEM imaging and spectroscopy, particularly using the group's new aberration-corrected JEOL GrandARM-2 STEM, which includes in-situ biasing, cooling, and heating capabilities. Research areas include ferroelectrics, antiferroelectrics, and emerging semiconductors, with opportunities to integrate atomic-scale characterization with atomistic modeling. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multi-PI, multi-institution research environment, working closely with synthesis and property characterization teams. The postdoc will also have the chance to co-mentor Ph.D. students, present at international conferences, and develop independent research directions. The position is ideal for candidates with strong experience in aberration-corrected STEM and a desire to collaborate across synthesis, characterization, and modeling teams. Applicants must hold a recent Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field, and demonstrate expertise in aberration-corrected STEM imaging and spectroscopy. Preferred qualifications include experience with in-situ STEM (biasing, cooling, heating) and/or machine-learning methods for data analysis. The appointment is fully funded, with an initial 1-year term renewable for up to 3 years, and includes support for conference travel. Washington University in St. Louis is a leading private research university with a vibrant academic community and excellent research facilities. The campus is located in St. Louis, Missouri, a city known for its livability and affordability. Interested candidates should email a single PDF (cover letter, CV, references) to Prof. Rohan Mishra ([email protected]) with the subject line 'Spring 2026 postdoc opening.' Screening begins immediately and continues until the position is filled. For more information, see the attached PDF or visit the M-cube group and university websites.

Electrostatic capacitors are foundational components of advanced electronics and high-power electrical systems owing to their ultrafast charging-discharging capability. Ferroelectric materials offer high maximum polarization, but high remnant polarization has hindered their effective deployment in energy storage applications. Previous methodologies have encountered problems because of the deteriorated crystallinity of the ferroelectric materials. We introduce an approach to control the relaxation time using two-dimensional (2D) materials while minimizing energy loss by using 2D/3D/2D heterostructures and preserving the crystallinity of ferroelectric 3D materials. Using this approach, we were able to achieve an energy density of 191.7 joules per cubic centimeter with an efficiency greater than 90%. This precise control over relaxation time holds promise for a wide array of applications and has the potential to accelerate the development of highly efficient energy storage systems.
