Doctoral Scholarship Holder in Analysis and/or Geometry

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Analysis and/or Geometry within the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science. As a dynamic and forward-thinking European university, Antwerp offers innovative academic education to over 20,000 students and conducts pioneering scientific research. The Department of Mathematics is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to contribute to its research lines in analysis and geometry, including topics such as symplectic geometry, (non-)integrable Hamiltonian systems, Floer homology, Dirac operators, symmetries of differential equations, geometric mechanics, and Finsler geometry. The successful candidate will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, organize their own research, and regularly report progress. Participation in the Antwerp Doctoral School’s study programme is required, supporting the PhD pathway. The candidate will present research findings at academic conferences and publish in scientific journals. Teaching responsibilities include supporting and delivering academic classes in Mathematics, ranging from basic courses to specialized topics aligned with the candidate’s research. Supervision of Bachelor and Master dissertations is also expected. Service duties include applying for a PhD Fellowship at the Science Foundation – Flanders (FWO) if eligible, assisting in student recruitment, alumni activities, and serving on departmental boards and committees. The position is open to candidates holding (or soon to hold) a Master degree in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering Sciences, with excellent study results. Candidates must not already possess a PhD in Mathematics. Teaching and research competences should align with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision and research policies. Motivation for professional development, integrity, creativity, and cooperation are essential. Non-Dutch speakers must be willing to learn Dutch. The scholarship is offered for two years, with the possibility of renewal for another two years following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. Doctoral researchers have access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School. Most work will be conducted at Campus Middelheim in a stimulating environment. Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 13 August 2026. Required attachments include a motivation letter, academic CV with study results, PDFs of bachelor and master thesis, and contact details of thesis supervisors. The selection committee will review applications after the deadline and notify candidates of decisions and next steps. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]. For job-specific inquiries, contact Prof. Sonja Hohloch at [email protected]. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
