About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of geometry and/or dynamics within the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Sciences. As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis at the intersection of the research lines of Prof. Sonja Hohloch and Prof. Tom Mestdag. Research topics may include symplectic geometry, (non-)integrable Hamiltonian systems, Floer homology, symmetries of differential equations, geometric mechanics, and Finsler geometry. The precise research topic will be determined in consultation with the selected candidate at the start of the scholarship.

You will organize your own PhD research, participate in the Antwerp Doctoral School, present your findings at academic conferences, and publish in scientific journals. Teaching duties include supporting and delivering academic classes in mathematics, supervising Bachelor and Master dissertations, and contributing to departmental service activities such as student recruitment and alumni engagement.

Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master degree in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering Sciences by the start date (October 1, 2026), and must not already hold a PhD in Mathematics. Excellent study results, broad knowledge of analysis, dynamical systems, and differential geometry, and alignment with the university’s educational and research vision are required. Candidates should demonstrate motivation for professional development, integrity, creativity, and cooperation, and be willing to learn Dutch if not already fluent.

The scholarship is offered for one year, renewable up to a maximum of four years following positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs, and access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School. Most work will be conducted at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating environment.

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by July 9, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, PDFs of bachelor and master thesis, and contact details of thesis supervisors. The selection committee will review applications after the deadline and notify candidates of next steps. For questions about the application form, contact [email protected]. For job-related inquiries, contact Prof. Sonja Hohloch at [email protected].

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a family-friendly, sustainable working environment.
