Project Researcher (PhD Student) or Postdoctoral Researcher in Engine Emission Aftertreatment Modelling, Simulation, Experiments and Control
The University of Vaasa is offering a two-year research position in the School of Technology and Innovation within the Energy Technology discipline, focused on engine emission aftertreatment modelling, simulation, experiments, and control. The opening is aligned with the Efficient Powertrain Solutions (EPS) Research Group, one of Finland’s largest powertrain-focused research teams, and is embedded in the EU-funded H4PERION project.
The work centers on advanced catalytic methane removal solutions for hydrogen and other gaseous fuels, with strong relevance to marine and off-road applications. The successful candidate will contribute to 1D modelling and simulations of catalytic aftertreatment systems, experimental catalyst testing, and the integration of exhaust aftertreatment with thermal and energy management strategies. The project combines modelling-driven development with laboratory validation and autonomous calibration routines to help meet ambitious emission and efficiency targets.
This position is suitable for either a Project Researcher (PhD Student) or a Postdoctoral Researcher, depending on the applicant’s background and eligibility. For the PhD student route, separate admission to the University of Vaasa doctoral programme is required through a dedicated application process. The role begins in January 2027 or as soon as mutually agreed, and the annual working time is 1612 hours.
Applicants should have a master’s degree or PhD in a relevant area such as chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, with experience in emission catalyst reaction modelling or combustion engines. Practical experience in 1D aftertreatment/combustion model calibration and validation, engine laboratory work, emission data post-processing, and ideally 3D simulation tools is highly valued. Knowledge of catalysts, chemical reaction mechanisms, and kinetics is an advantage, along with strong analytical and academic writing skills.
