The University of Sydney is offering a postdoctoral research associate position in the field of Electro-Catalytic Nitrogen Fixation, focusing on developing sustainable, electrified alternatives to the Haber-Bosch process. This flagship project, funded by the Australian Research Council (Discovery Project 2026-2028), is a collaboration between the HJ Jiang Group (led by Dr. Haihui Joy Jiang) and the MMY Group (Prof. Thomas Maschmeyer, Prof. Tony Masters, and Dr. Alexander Yuen). The research aims to turn air and water into nitrogenous chemicals by pioneering radical reactions at air-water-solid interfaces, designing hybrid catalyst systems, and engineering innovative electrochemical reactors. The successful candidate will lead advanced mechanistic studies, perform energy efficiency and scaling analyses, and mentor PhD and Honours students. The position is based at the School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, a top 20 institution globally (QS ranking 2025). Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field (expected completion by June 2026), with expertise in electrocatalysis, analytical chemistry, and research experience in nitrogen fixation or plasma/air-gap electrochemistry. A strong background in organometallic or inorganic synthesis is preferred. The role offers a competitive Academic Level A salary ($117k–$126k p.a. base) plus 17% superannuation, with a two-year fixed term and possible extension to three years. International candidates should apply 3-6 months in advance; domestic candidates at least 2 months in advance. Applications are submitted via a Google form; no email or platform enquiries are accepted. For more information, visit the project and group pages or contact the supervisors via their academic profiles. This is an excellent opportunity to drive high-impact research in sustainable chemistry and industrial electrification at a leading Australian institution.

Fully Funded PhD in Catalytic Air-gap Electrochemistry and Nitrogen Fixation at University of Sydney
The University of Sydney is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the field of Catalytic Air-gap Electrochemistry for Nitrogen Fixation. This interdisciplinary project aims to revolutionize nitrogen fixation, a process crucial for global food security and green chemical production, by developing new catalytic methods inspired by natural lightning strikes. The research is a joint effort between the Jiang group (Plasma Chemistry) and the MMY group (Catalysis) at the School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, which is ranked among the top 20 universities worldwide. The project focuses on designing green reaction pathways using high energy electrons in non-thermal plasma to activate nitrogen from air and water, driving radical reactions at the air–water–catalyst interfaces. Research activities will include heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, catalyst material design, bench-top reactor development, and advanced characterization techniques such as chromatography, microscopy, and spectroscopy. The opportunity is part of an ARC discovery project (2026-2028) and offers extensive collaboration and presentation opportunities with leading institutes. Applicants should have a strong background in Chemistry and materials science, with a 4-year undergraduate degree (First Class Honours or research thesis) or a Master’s Degree by early 2026. Prior research experience, preferably with a publication, is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent English communication skills and have an overall GPA above 3.5/4.0 (or >85/100 or top 10% in class), and must be graduating from a top 100 university worldwide, preferably top 50. The positions are fully funded, including tuition exemption and a tax-free stipend of over $40,000 AUD per year. Research scholarships are awarded competitively, and additional opportunities for conference presentations and collaborations are available based on performance. To apply, candidates should submit the specified Google form with their CV for initial screening. International applicants should apply 3-6 months in advance, and domestic applicants at least 2 months in advance. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email within 2–3 weeks. No follow-up emails or platform enquiries are permitted. For more information, visit the group websites: HJ Jiang group and MMY group .
