A fully funded PhD opportunity is available at the University of Newcastle, Australia, in partnership with AgriFutures Australia, focusing on reproductive genomics in Thoroughbred horses. The project investigates the role of the LY49B gene in early embryo loss, a significant challenge in the Australian breeding industry, potentially linked to a recessive genetic variant. The research will involve large-scale genomic analysis of the LY49B gene in the Thoroughbred population and assessment of its biological impact on embryo development using advanced reproductive biology techniques. The successful candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Zamira Gibb at the University of Newcastle and receive advanced training in equine genomics at the University of Sydney with Dr Brandon Velie. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in animal, veterinary, or biological sciences, with an Honours or Masters qualification in a relevant discipline. Substantial hands-on experience with horses and the equine industry is essential, as is a valid driver's license and access to a car. Experience in reproduction and genomics is desirable. The position offers a tax-exempt PhD stipend of $38,563 per annum, with preference for candidates who already hold a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or bring their own stipend.
