About this position
AstraZeneca-funded PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge in organic synthesis and bioconjugation.
The project builds on C–H functionalisation chemistry to develop new methods for selectively modifying tyrosine residues in peptides, proteins, and antibodies. The research sits at the interface of reaction discovery, mechanistic studies, and translational applications in antibody-drug conjugates.
The student will be jointly supervised by Pawel Dydio at Cambridge and Dr Balakumar Vijayakrishnan at AstraZeneca, with additional interaction with Dr Luke Masterson and other AstraZeneca colleagues. There are opportunities to conduct research at both institutions.
Applicants should have a strong interest in organic synthesis and in understanding how reactions work. Prior experience in bioconjugation is not required, as training will be provided. The studentship is open to applicants of all nationalities.
Funding includes a stipend and UK Home-rate tuition fees. The post is a four-year PhD starting 1 October 2027. Note that any international fee difference must be covered by additional approved funding and cannot be self-funded.
Application deadline: 8 December 2026. For full details and to apply, use the link provided in the post. Informal enquiries can be sent to [email protected].
