About this position

Nottingham Trent University is offering a 2027 PhD studentship on Creative Futures Mansfield: Neurodivergent Young People, Aspiration Rising and Civic Cultural Opportunity. The project is located in Mansfield, England, and is delivered collaboratively by Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham and Mansfield District Council Cultural Services through the Collaboratory research programme.

The research will investigate how sustained creative participation can help neurodivergent young people aged 14–21 explore interests, articulate aspirations and imagine possible futures. It takes a neurodiversity-affirming approach encompassing autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia or developmental coordination disorder, and Tourette’s syndrome. Key themes include creativity, future orientation, agency, confidence, belonging, identity, opportunity and civic cultural provision.

The PhD uses a longitudinal, mixed-methods, participatory and practice-led design. It will involve approximately 50–64 neurodivergent young people, parents or carers, creative practitioners and facilitators. Activities may include drawing, storytelling, model-making, performance, animation, sound, digital making, immersive projection and optional XR or AI tools. The project will also include a Young Creatives Advisory Panel and evaluation of existing Mansfield creative programmes.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at Nottingham Trent University and supervised by Jennifer Bell, Danielle Ropar and Ian Dearman. Applicants should consult the official university project page for eligibility, application requirements, funding details and the application process.
