About this position
The University of Antwerp is seeking a full-time doctoral scholarship holder to join the Department of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies in the Faculty of Applied Engineering. The position centers on artificial intelligence for hydroclimate extremes, with a focus on analyzing and modeling extreme events such as floods, droughts, and compound events using deep learning methods. The successful candidate will prepare and defend a PhD thesis, develop deep learning-based approaches to model and understand the drivers of hydroclimate extremes, and contribute to the Horizon Europe project SCEWERO and other related initiatives.
Responsibilities include publishing scientific articles, presenting research at international conferences, and supervising bachelor and master students. The role also involves limited teaching and research support tasks (up to 2 hours per week). Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, with at least distinction or equivalent honors.
Required skills include fluency in Python, machine learning, and deep-learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, as well as strong English language proficiency. Experience in hydroclimate extreme event analysis and a record of publication in high-ranking venues are advantageous but not mandatory. The scholarship is initially for one year, renewable for up to three additional years following positive evaluation. The monthly stipend is set according to university pay scales for doctoral scholarship holders, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting support (bicycle allowance or public transport reimbursement).
The work will be based at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic, international environment. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The application deadline is 13 November 2025.
Applicants should submit their materials via the university’s online platform, including a motivation letter, academic CV with study results and grade ranking, and proof of programming skills. For further information, contact Dr.
Hossein Tabari at [email protected].
