About this position
The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in children’s literature studies, based in the Department of Literature within the Faculty of Arts. This position offers the opportunity to conduct original research on the theme of friendship in German and English children’s literature, focusing on how friendship is practiced, negotiated, and represented across classics and contemporary works. The project draws on friendship studies, a vibrant field in sociology and cultural studies, and employs narrative analysis, close reading, and discourse analysis to explore questions of identity, difference, and relationality in literary texts.
Key research questions include: How is friendship practiced in children’s literature? Who becomes friends with whom? What roles do age, gender, race, class, and religion play in these relationships? How are differences and conflicts resolved? What contextual factors—such as space, adult roles, historical period, national context, genre, and age range—influence the framing and practice of fictional friendships? The project responds to contemporary calls for greater attention to entanglement, co-dependency, and living networks in philosophy, education, and literary studies.
As a doctoral researcher, you will prepare and defend a PhD dissertation, publish peer-reviewed articles, and present at conferences. You will also undertake limited teaching and research support tasks in English and German Literature. The position is based at the University of Antwerp’s city campus, offering a dynamic and stimulating academic environment with access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in German and/or English Literature or a closely related field, or obtain it by the start date. Experience in children’s literature studies is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic results, high proficiency in English and German, and strong teaching and research competences. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is essential.
The scholarship is awarded for two years, with the possibility of renewal for another two years following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
To apply, submit your application via the University of Antwerp’s online platform by 10 August 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, writing sample, and references. Selection interviews will be held on 26 August. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]. For academic inquiries, reach out to Prof. Andree Michaelis-König or Prof. Vanessa Joosen with "Friendship in children’s literature" in the subject line.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading European university and contribute to innovative research in children’s literature, literary theory, and cultural studies.
