University of Antwerp Doctoral Scholarship

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Plant Ecophysiology within the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences. This PhD project focuses on understanding how hydrodynamic forcing shapes root development in submerged water plants (macrophytes) at both morphological and physiological levels. The research utilizes plant physiology and biochemistry approaches, including the use of the artificial river facility, the Mesodrome, to simulate environmental conditions. The project aims to advance knowledge in plant ecophysiology, with particular emphasis on transcriptome and hormone analysis, and will contribute to scientific publications in the field.

As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, participate in limited teaching and research support tasks, and engage with a dynamic academic environment at the Groenenborger Campus. The position offers a two-year doctoral scholarship, renewable for another two years following a positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. You will also have access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in Biology or Bioscience Engineering, demonstrate excellent academic results and relevant laboratory skills, and possess teaching and research competences aligned with the University of Antwerp’s vision and policies. Fluency in English, both written and oral, is required. Experience with transcriptome and hormone analysis is considered an asset.
