About this position
The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in Built Heritage Studies, focusing on the augmented mapping of cocoa heritage in São Tomé and Príncipe or Ghana. This position is based in the Department of Heritage within the Faculty of Design Sciences, offering a dynamic and international academic environment. The research project aims to address gaps in the study of cocoa heritage by exploring its multidimensional and multi-narrative aspects, including both tangible and intangible values associated with cocoa cultivation. The project seeks to systematically document these values and develop a transferable framework for mapping agricultural systems heritage, using an augmented, multimodal approach to represent cocoa heritage in a holistic, people-centered manner.
As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, collaborate with colleagues in the Built Heritage group of Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (ARCHES) and the Architecture and Interior (A+I) research group, and publish scientific articles independently and with your promotors, Prof. dr. Yonca Erkan and Prof. dr. Sara Eloy. You will also undertake limited teaching and research support tasks for ARCHES and A+I. The research is designed to generate scientific knowledge that can inform strategic insights and guidelines for understanding and mapping food-related multidimensional heritage, particularly in the context of climate change.
Applicants must hold a Master degree in heritage studies or a related discipline (architecture, architectural conservation, urban planning, interior architecture, etc.) or obtain it by the start date. Excellent academic results are required, along with fluency at least at C1 level in English and/or Portuguese. Dutch language skills are desirable but not essential. Candidates should demonstrate teaching and research competencies aligned with the University’s educational vision and research policies, and experience in the cultural heritage sector or a similar field is desirable.
The scholarship is offered for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of four years following positive evaluations. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (BAP). Doctoral researchers will have access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School, and will work primarily at Campus Mutsaard in a stimulating environment. The planned start date is 1 November 2026 (or 1 January 2027 for non-Belgian nationals) or as soon as possible thereafter.
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 3 August 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter and CV in English. The selection committee will review applications promptly after the deadline, with interviews expected in the first week of September. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, contact Prof. Yonca Erkan at [email protected].
The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and offers a family-friendly, sustainable working environment that invests in employee growth.
