Dr H Morag M McCallum PhD Studentship

The School of Culture & Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow is offering the prestigious Dr H. Morag M. McCallum PhD Studentship for research in classical singing. This opportunity is open to projects across the broadest remit of classical singing, including interdisciplinary research in theatre, film, translation, performance, pedagogy, musical works, and social, cultural, political, and artistic movements, both contemporary and historical. The studentship particularly encourages proposals that focus on underrepresented groups’ engagement with classical singing or aim to promote such engagement.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and collaborative music community at Glasgow, which embraces both traditional and innovative forms of music scholarship. The research environment spans musicology, performance practices, composition and sonic arts, music industries, and ethnomusicology. The classical singing research cluster is anchored by academics such as Prof. Clair Rowden, Prof. Eva Moreda Rodríguez, Dr Vera Wolkowicz, and Prof. Kirsteen McCue, with connections to the Transatlantic Music Theatre Network and the ArtsLab ‘Spheres of Singing’ initiative. The University also supports several choirs and ensembles, fostering a rich musical life on campus.

The studentship provides a full tuition fee waiver and an annual stipend for three years at the UKRI PhD level (£21,805 for 2026-27), payable in instalments subject to satisfactory progress. Additional funding for research-related expenses, including activities that promote engagement in classical singing, may also be considered. Both home and international students are eligible to apply.

Applicants are selected primarily on academic ability, with particular emphasis on the quality of their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. However, candidates with alternative expertise and experience who can demonstrate readiness for doctoral research are also welcome. Applications should include a CV and a research proposal (3–5 pages, including references) that identifies a potential supervisor or supervisory team and outlines any knowledge-exchange or workshop activities requiring additional funding.
