About this position
FirstPrinciples Foundation is offering an AI-Native Physicist Fellowship for researchers who want to use frontier AI in an ambitious physics project and, importantly, make the research workflow itself part of the output.
The fellowship is designed around a simple but demanding idea: the chosen fellow will pursue their own physics research project while also documenting how AI is used to accelerate discovery, what worked, what failed, and how results were verified. The program emphasizes rigorous, shareable practice around AI-assisted physics research, with the deliverable extending beyond the scientific findings to include the workflow and method behind them.
This is a remote fellowship with a 12-month full-time structure and an inaugural cohort starting in January 2027. The foundation expects to host multiple cohorts per year, creating an ongoing environment for physicists working at the interface of research and AI-enabled methods.
The opportunity is aimed at physicists already beyond the PhD stage, including senior postdocs, research scientists, junior faculty, and independents, while also welcoming strong late-stage PhD researchers. The advert notes that the fellowship is not intended for pure ML-methodology projects or generic black-box “AI for science” proposals.
Selected fellows will receive support for their research project together with access to compute, API credits, and frontier AI platform tools. The program is overseen by a program lead and advisory committee, who review applications and interview shortlisted candidates.

What's required
Applicants should be working physicists past the PhD, including senior postdocs, research scientists, junior faculty, and independents. Late-stage PhD students with a strong track record are also welcome. Candidates should be willing to publish methods and results openly, and should provide a CV, publication list, compute/token budget, contact details, academic background, and short written answers about the project and how they use AI. Pure ML-methodology projects and black-box AI-for-science proposals are not a fit.
How to apply
Create an account and apply through the online portal. Answer the required questions in the portal and upload the requested materials, including your CV, publication list, and compute/token budget. Optional proposal materials and recommendation letters may be added.
