About this position
PhD project in scalable AI for quantum error correction at Monash University
This scholarship supports a PhD project focused on developing scalable artificial intelligence methods for quantum error correction. The research aims to build decoding approaches capable of handling error information from millions of qubits at microsecond time scales, using techniques such as deep neural networks and transformers. The project sits at the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning, addressing a key bottleneck in making quantum computers more reliable and useful for large-scale computation.
The candidate will join the Scalable Quantum Systems Lab under the direction of Professor Muhammad Usman at Monash University. The lab is described as a hub for innovative quantum computing work, including applications linked to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics Games, the National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility, and Quantum Artificial Intelligence for Defence. The successful student will be part of a wider research program within the Faculty of Information Technology, interacting with post-doctoral researchers and other PhD students in a collaborative environment.
The position is framed as a research doctorate scholarship opportunity rather than a taught program, with the project centred on fast, scalable decoding for quantum error correction and its role in enabling practical quantum computing applications.
