About this position

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is inviting applications for its 4-year PhD Programme, beginning on 1 October 2027 at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. The programme is designed for students interested in genomics, genome research, genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics and biomedical science.

At least 12 funded PhD studentships are available on a competitive basis. Successful students receive full financial support, including University of Cambridge tuition fees, regardless of nationality. Visa and immigration health surcharge costs will be reimbursed for international students.

Applicants should hold or be about to achieve a first-class or good upper-second-class degree, or an equivalent overseas qualification. Non-native English speakers must meet the University of Cambridge English language requirements before admission. The application requires academic records, transcripts, motivation and research-interest statements, relevant scientific and technical experience, details of research or work experience, two academic referees and supporting information.

Applicants apply to the programme rather than directly to a specific Faculty member. During the application, candidates select three Faculty members or senior scientists whose research interests align with their goals. Shortlisted candidates will attend interviews on 25 January 2027, with alternative videoconference interviews available in the preceding two weeks.

The online application deadline is 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT. Both academic references must be submitted by 1 December 2026 at 09:00 GMT. The Sanger Institute application is free, although successful candidates must subsequently apply for University of Cambridge admission.

What's required

Applicants must provide academic qualifications, language skills, a motivation statement, research interests, relevant scientific and technical experience, details of up to three research or work experiences, two academic referees, and university transcripts in PDF format. Applicants must complete the online application and participate in the competitive selection process; admission to the University of Cambridge is also required after selection.

How to apply

Complete the Wellcome Sanger Institute online application form and upload university transcript(s) as PDF files by 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT. Provide details for two academic referees and ensure both online references are submitted by 1 December 2026 at 09:00 GMT.
