About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia focusing on how bacterial hosts control domesticated viral machines to drive horizontal gene transfer in marine environments.
This project explores gene transfer agents (GTAs), phage-derived particles that package host DNA and transfer it to neighboring cells. The work addresses key questions in bacterial evolution and marine microbial ecology: why bacteria retain GTA systems, how these systems are regulated, how abundant they are in the ocean, and what ecological benefits they provide.
The model organism is Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3, a marine Alphaproteobacterium involved in carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen cycling in the phycosphere. The student will study how host regulatory networks control RpGTA production, identify ecological triggers for GTA induction, and quantify the abundance, expression, and diversity of GTAs in marine Roseobacter communities.
Research will combine molecular genetics, cell imaging, marine metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics, including techniques such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, Tn-seq, and live-cell imaging. Training is based mainly in the Le lab at the John Innes Centre, with complementary expertise from the Todd lab in marine microbial ecology, metagenomic sampling, and bioinformatics, plus additional mentoring from scientists at JIC, Quadram Institute, and UEA.
Funding is available through the ARIES studentship scheme. Successful UKRI-eligible candidates receive full tuition/fees coverage, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are open to international applicants, with the home/international fee difference waived, though relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.
Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first degree in biology, microbiology, or a related discipline.
Apply via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal before 16 December 2026.
