About this position
Cranfield University is offering a full-time, three-year PhD studentship on Distributed Machine Learning over Mobile Networks, investigating how artificial intelligence can deliver seamless services to mobile users through AI-enabled Radio Access Networks (AI-on-RAN).
The research will explore distributed and mobile inference of large language models, including real-time adaptation of token usage, memory, and network bandwidth. The project addresses latency, data sovereignty, mobile demand, computationally intensive inference, and the use of edge-computing resources in future 6G telecommunications networks. It combines computer science, distributed machine learning, wireless networking, telecommunications, and foundation-model research.
Supervision is provided by Professor Weisi Guo and Dr. Mengbang Zou at Cranfield University. Students will participate in university-based and wider Future Telecommunications Hubs training alongside doctoral researchers from other UK universities, with opportunities for cross-disciplinary exposure to AI, telecoms, defence, government, and infrastructure stakeholders.
Applicants should have a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in computer science, statistics, electronic engineering, information engineering, or a related discipline. An AI background and curiosity about foundation models at the algorithmic level are particularly suitable. Funding is restricted to applicants with UK Home fee status.
The studentship is sponsored by Cranfield University and the EPSRC Future Telecommunications Hubs initiative. It provides a tax-free bursary of up to £21,805 plus fees for three years. The application deadline is 3 February 2027, with a planned start date of 7 June 2027. Early application is encouraged because the vacancy may be filled before the closing date.

What's required
Applicants should hold a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline such as computer science, statistics, or electronic/information engineering. The project suits applicants with fundamental curiosity about how foundation models work at the algorithmic level and an AI background with interest in wireless networking. Funding eligibility requires Home fee status under UK Department for Education rules; UK or Irish nationals ordinarily resident in the UK or Republic of Ireland generally qualify for Home fees, while other applicants normally pay Overseas fees.
How to apply
Complete the online application form through the Cranfield University research degree application process. Upload all relevant documents; incomplete applications will not be considered.
