About this position
Bangor University’s DSP Centre is offering a fully funded three-year PhD studentship in physical-layer network security.
The project sits within advanced telecommunications research supported by three major research projects, including two funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and one through the Flintshire & Wrexham Investment Zone Research and Innovation Programme. The research spans device-, system-, and network-level technologies and contributes to innovation and digital growth across North Wales.
Funding: UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate) plus a full tuition fee waiver.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical science, engineering, or technology discipline. Desirable background areas include optical, wireless, or optical wireless communications; joint communications and sensing; data networks; digital or analogue signal processing; mobile communications; high-speed digital circuit design; and computer programming.
Research environment: You will undertake theoretical and/or experimental research under the supervision of DSP Centre academics, publish findings in journals and conferences, present at meetings and workshops, operate laboratory equipment, support proposal development, assist with undergraduate supervision, and take part in training and development.
Additional highlights: The appointment is initially for three years with the possibility of extension subject to funding. Candidates are expected to start as soon as possible. Non-UK/EU nationals may need an ATAS certificate. Bangor University is located in North Wales and offers a strong research environment alongside a high quality of life.
Application deadline: 24 November 2026.
