About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity: How fungal communities recover in lowland grasslands after disturbance.

This doctoral project investigates fungal community recovery across three UK grassland sites in Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Devon. The research will use a time-since-disturbance gradient to study soil microbial communities and ecosystem recovery.

Methods include soil sampling, metabarcoding of fungi and bacteria, soil chemistry analysis, and a focal grass species study examining roots, rhizosphere, and bulk soil. The PhD offers field, laboratory, and bioinformatics training and is being undertaken in collaboration with Rothamsted Research, with links to the Earlham Institute, the University of East Anglia, and the ARIES DTP.

The project is suited to applicants with a degree in ecology, microbiology, environmental science, or a related discipline. Eligibility requires a UK 2:1 Bachelor's Honours degree or equivalent, plus IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in each category. The opportunity is described as fully funded, although no stipend amount or detailed fee coverage is provided in the post.
